Equity Long-Short Fund

Strategy types · a SIF concept, explained from SEBI’s rules.

In one line

A SIF strategy that keeps at least 80% in equity and equity-related instruments and may take unhedged short positions of up to 25% of net assets through derivatives. It may offer daily redemption.

The rule

SEBI's SIF circular lists the Equity Long-Short Fund first among the equity-oriented strategies: minimum investment in equity and equity-related instruments of 80%, and maximum short exposure through unhedged derivative positions in equity of 25%. It is an open-ended or interval strategy, with daily redemption or any less frequent schedule the fund house decides (para 3.2, table A1). A SIF may run only one strategy in each category (para 3.3).

Questions

What is an Equity Long-Short Fund?

An Equity Long-Short Fund invests at least 80% in equity and equity-related instruments and may take unhedged short positions of up to 25% of net assets through derivatives. It may offer daily redemption, or less often if the fund house chooses.

Can a fund house run two SIFs of the same type?

No. To avoid proliferation, SEBI allows only one strategy in each category per SIF, so a fund house can run at most seven SIF strategies, one of each type.
