Scenario analysis

Risk and disclosure · a SIF concept, explained from SEBI’s rules.

In one line

A section of every SIF offer document that shows the loss an investor could suffer from given market movements, including from the strategy's derivative positions.

The rule

The ISID must include a scenario analysis depicting the expected loss to the investor due to market movements, in a model format AMFI prescribes in consultation with SEBI (circular para 13.2), and a scenario analysis for derivative positions (para 11.4). SEBI's FAQs list it among the things to read before investing (A5) and distributors must explain it (C10).

Example

Illustrative example. A scenario table might show what a 10% or 20% fall in equity markets, or a rise in interest rates, would do to the strategy's NAV given its long and short positions. Each strategy's own table is in its ISID.

Where it applies

Every SIF strategy type, within each strategy’s own offer document. All 36 live strategies are listed on our tracker; each one’s offer document sets its own limits within SEBI’s.

Questions

What should I read before investing in a SIF?

The strategy's Investment Strategy Information Document (ISID), Key Information Memorandum (KIM) and Statement of Additional Information (SAI): especially the objective, asset allocation, derivatives exposure, risk band, scenario analysis, redemption frequency, notice period, fees and exit load. Later notices can change these, so check them too.
