Minimum investment threshold (₹10 lakh)

Investing and the ₹10 lakh rules · a SIF concept, explained from SEBI’s rules.

In one line

₹10 lakh: the least an investor must hold across all strategies of one SIF, counted at PAN level. Accredited investors are exempt, and regular mutual fund holdings do not count.

The rule

The fund house must ensure an investor's aggregate investment across all strategies of the SIF, at PAN level, is not less than ₹10 lakh; investments in the same AMC's regular mutual fund schemes do not count (circular paras 4.1.1, 4.1.2; FAQ A6). Accredited investors are exempt (A7). A joint folio is assessed on the first holder's PAN (A8), and several transactions on one day may be added together (A9). SIP, STP and SWP are allowed within the threshold (para 4.1.3). Mandatory investments by AMC staff are outside it (clarification of 9 Apr 2025).

Example

Illustrative example. ₹6 lakh in one strategy of a SIF and ₹4 lakh in another strategy of the same SIF, on the same day, together meet the threshold. ₹6 lakh in one fund house's SIF and ₹4 lakh in another's do not.

Questions

What is the minimum investment in a SIF?

₹10 lakh, counted across all the strategies of one SIF at your PAN level. Regular mutual fund holdings, even with the same fund house, do not count toward it. Accredited investors are exempt.

Can I meet the ₹10 lakh minimum across two fund houses?

No. The threshold applies to each SIF separately, so ₹5 lakh in each of two different SIFs meets neither. To invest with two SIFs you need ₹10 lakh in each; within one SIF, you can split it across its strategies.

How does the minimum apply to a joint holding?

It is assessed on the first holder's PAN. For a joint folio, eligibility and the ₹10 lakh threshold are checked against the principal (first) holder.

Can I invest in a SIF through a SIP?

Yes, where the strategy offers one. SEBI allows SIPs, STPs and SWPs in SIFs, subject to each offer document and the ₹10 lakh threshold. Minimum SIP instalments are set by each fund house: ₹1,000 at qsif and ₹5,000 at Platinum SIF, for example.
